Enjoy memorable desert adventures in Liwa
The climate and geographical location of the UAE ensure some truly breathtaking landscapes, with one such mesmerising destination being Liwa in southern Abu Dhabi. Popularly known as the Liwa Oasis, this desert-based dwelling was where the Bani Yas tribe originally settled way back on in the 18th century. It’s this history and the awe-inspiring natural beauty that make Liwa such an amazing place to visit – but you might be wondering what there is to do once you get there? Well, from dune bashing to ancient forts, there really is no shortage of amazing activities to take part in and fantastic places to see. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the best things to do in Liwa.
BEST THINGS TO DO IN LIWA
Plan a trip with your friends or visit with family for a holiday to remember. Here are some popular activities in Liwa you can try!
DISCOVER TEL MOREEB
Tel Moreeb is one of the tallest sand dunes in the world. The name literally translates to “a scary mountain.” It is 300 metres tall with a 50-degree incline — making it tough to scale.
For those who do manage to summit the dune, the spectacular desert views are well worth the effort. You’ll also spot people trying to climb on quad and dirt bikes.
VISIT FORT DHAFEER
Another major attraction at Liwa is Fort Dhafeer. The fort is a symbol of an era gone by when the region was at risk of invasions. The structure protected local residents from attacks by enemies and bandits.
The architecture dates back to 19th century Arabic fort designs. Constructed from mud bricks, it still stands today.
Climb up the terrace to see the expansive desert and the tranquil oasis. The best part of visiting Fort Dhafeer is that you don’t need a special 4×4 to get here.
VISIT THE CAMEL FARM
One of the most popular things to do in Liwa for families, in particular, is to visit a camel farm. These Bedouin-run camel farms are free to enter and offer a one-of-a-kind experience to visitors.
Spot the special breed black-coated residents called the Liwa Camel. This particular breed is native to the Liwa region. They stand out from the rest of the herd due to their distinctive black colour. Additionally, you can also try fresh camel milk at these farms.
HEAD TO THE TRANQUIL LIWA OASIS
Lofty palm trees in the middle of the desert are a sight to behold! Liwa Oasis, one of the most beautiful UAE Oases, is a lush-green haven located on the northern border of the Empty Quarter.
The stunning oasis has underground freshwater reserves that provided for the resident bedouins across multiple centuries. This is also what makes it one of the leading date cultivation oases in the UAE.
The greenery is a complete contrast to the intimidating sand dunes of the vast Empty Quarter. The picturesque surroundings make it a great place for a picnic.
TAKE A STROLL THROUGH THE DESERT
Desert walks are the perfect way to explore the expanse of the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter). The sands spread across 650,000 kilometres. Beginners are recommended to traverse the dunes with expert guides who have experience with desert walks in the Empty Quarter.
CAMP OVERNIGHT IN THE DESERT
The Liwa Desert is the perfect spot for overnight camping in the UAE. It is one of the most popular things to do in Liwa and many tour operators also offer overnight camping packages. Make the most of your trip by taking a professional guide along or opt for a suitable desert camping package.
DUNE BASHING AND SANDBOARDING AT LIWA NIGHTS
Liwa Nights is a camping location that offers luxurious glamping and other desert adventures, including dune bashing in a special 4×4 buggy. There are several other tour operators in Abu Dhabi and Dubai that offer dune bashing tours. But if you have your own vehicle, you can take on the dunes yourself after carefully planning your journey. Sandboarding in Liwa is also a thrilling and popular activity, are you ready to ride those dunes?
