ABOUT RAS AL KHAIMAH PLASTIC BAG BAN
Different measures to ban or limit the usage of single-use plastic have been enforced in many countries including the UAE. Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi already have taken steps in this direction. From the start of 2024, the RAK government will be enforcing a ban on single-use plastic.
Over the years, single-use plastic has become a part of our lifestyle. Wherever we go to shop, be it for a snack from the bakery down the street or a fancy boutique, a shopping bag comes with every purchase. However, in order to combat climate change, there is a global push to minimise or simply end the usage of single-use plastic. The Ras Al Khaimah’s Environment Protection and Development Authority (EPDA) is the lead agency on this initiative.
Ras al Khaimah’s Environment Protection and Development Authority announced plastic bag ban as per the Law No.4 of 2023. It was issued by His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, a Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.
IMPACT ON CONSUMERS AND BUSINESSES
Ban on single use plastic bags in Ras Al Khaimah would result in both consumers and businesses having to alter their general habits. Businesses can switch to eco-friendly alternatives and sustainable packaging. Consumers can also carry with them either paper bags or totes. There are plenty of available options and more are likely to come to the fore as businesses adapt and present newer solutions to ensure comfort and convenience of their customers.
