HISTORY OF THE SHEIKH ZAYED MOSQUE IN FUJAIRAH
The Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Fujairah was built and opened for worship in 2015, with the first Eid prayer led by His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Fujairah.
The mosque is also called the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Fujairah and is now the main mosque in the emirate. It also holds the crown of being the second-largest mosque in the UAE, after the mosque of the same name – the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.

The design and construction of the Fujairah Grand Mosque resembles that of the popular Sultan Ahmed Mosque in Istanbul, also known as the Blue Mosque. It took 10 years of planning and a budget of AED 210 million to build the mosque, a task which was entrusted to a team from Mabani Engineering Consulting. The project was overseen by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE; the Government of Fujairah and the UAE’s Ministry of Public Works.
The Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Fujairah was constructed from the ground up in a span of 700 days, resulting in a place of worship that personifies elegance and grandeur. It involved the hard work and labour of around 600 workers.
The design embodies Arabic and Ottoman architecture, along with modern design elements. The inside of the mosque features Moorish arches that are reflective of the Great Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba in Spain.
The Sheikh Zayed Mosque Fujairah spans an area of 420,000 sq.ft. and features 65 magnificent domes and six minarets in a white marble structure. The height of the minarets varies from 260 feet to 330 feet.
The mosque also has a beautiful courtyard adorned with fountains, gardens and flowers. The mosque can house approximately 28,000 worshipers, while the courtyard can hold up to 14,000 people easily. There is also a female prayer hall that can accommodate about 2,500 women.
The carpet in the Fujairah Grand Mosque has been woven in three sections, but appears as one seamless magnificent carpet. It is designed as a garden with many flowers. The entire mosque features beautiful chandeliers imported from Egypt. Red and gold colours dominate the interior theme, due to their association with royalty. In the main entrance, you will find verses from the Holy Quran inscribed on the walls.

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque has a central location in Fujairah, which means that it is visible from all over the emirate. Is it located on Mohammed Bin Matar Road and is close to the Hamad Bin Abdulla Road on the E89 highway. It is easily accessible from anywhere in Fujairah. The mosque also has a parking area that can accommodate around 3,000 cars.
