Here’s some fantastic news for all art lovers in Dubai. A magnificent Sculpture Park has been unveiled at DIFC’s iconic Gate Building. The open-air gallery is a tribute to the UAE’s Golden Jubilee and features 65 sculptures and art pieces from both local and international artists. We bring you everything you need to know about the Sculpture Park in DIFC.
WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE SCULPTURE PARK IN DIFC
Art exhibitions in Dubai take place all-year-round, with the latest to create a buzz being the DIFC Sculpture Park. Based upon the theme of Harmony of Different Voices: A celebration of UAE’s 50th year anniversary and similarly inspired by the World’s Greatest Show – Expo 2020 – the premise of the Sculpture Park in DIFC is to promote the richness and diversity of UAE culture.
Art galleries such as Leila Heller Gallery, Firetti Contemporary, AWC Dubai, and other independent artists will display their work here. Running until the 30th of June 2022, this outdoor exhibition aims to encourage open-air art galleries across the city as per the vision of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed, chairwoman of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority.
Turning attention to the exhibits themselves, it’s fair to say that ‘Unwind’ by British sculptor Richard Hudson is gaining a lot of attention. Emirati artist Azza Al Qubaisi’s ‘Alphabet of Life’ is also making its mark as viewers pass through a palm oasis, representing growth, solidarity and prosperity. ‘Dénicheur d’aigles’ by Wim Delvoye, made in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Brussels, is another masterpiece on display.
Many people visit the exhibition especially to see Turkish artist Mert Ege Kose’s ‘Sculpture II’. This eye-catching metal statue is a remarkable representation of how repeating patterns merge. Kose’s fellow countrymen, Erdil Yasaroglu, has also contributed a stunning sculpture that depicts four anthropomorphic rabbits. Elsewhere, visual artist Ahmet Güneştekin sheds light on culture and tradition with his ‘Gelene-ek–Horse’ whilst, if you’re interested in paintings, Sacha Jafri’s ‘Lyricism Entwined’ and Ana D’Castro’s ‘Irene’ painting must-sees.
WHAT ARE THEY SAYING?
Arif Amiri, chief executive of DIFC Authority highlighted that the whole event was being organised to celebrate the country’s golden jubilee:
“Today is very special. We are celebrating our open-air sculpture park. Within this park, we have over 50 art and sculpture pieces, and this is important because we are celebrating our Golden Jubilee.”
“Over the years, DIFC has been developed into a vibrant urban destination promoting innovation, harmonious living and sustainability,” he said.
“As a part of our commitment to support Dubai’s art and culture vision, we are transforming DIFC into a unique sculpture park that will continue to shape the emirate’s open-air movement whilst attracting international artists to the centre.”
