The Resistance Monument Sharjah was built to honour the local heroes who repelled the Portuguese Invasion of 1507. His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, gave the order for the construction of this historical site.
The Sharjah Museums Authority oversees the project that tells the narrative of the people who gave their lives to protect their beloved city. Visitors also get to watch the stunning full-length feature film “Khorfakkan 1507”, a dramatic depiction that offers fascinating insights into the epic battle.
There is a walkway around the memorial that offers spectacular views of the city below and the remnants of a bygone era. The Khorfakkan Monument features a curved geometric design that ensures its visibility from different parts of the city.
FACILITIES
The Sharjah Museums Authority is responsible for the maintenance of the monument which features a spacious lobby, spanning 898 metres, divided into two separate halls. The larger one is dedicated to film screenings with the capacity for up to 40 people.
The helmet-shaped structure’s second hall houses an exhibition of historical posters and memorabilia that represent the 14th-century tools used by the people of Khorfakkan in the battle. One of the halls is made of glass offering breathtaking views of Khorfakkan
Other amenities include wheelchair access ramps, restrooms, parking lots and lifts.
