How to request a DEWA Deposit Refund in Dubai
When creating a DEWA account in Dubai, users are required to pay a refundable DEWA deposit. If you’re leaving the country or moving to a new location, you can request that this DEWA deposit be refunded to you. But how exactly do you get your DEWA deposit refunded? We share the steps to getting your refund with ease.
Getting your DEWA deposit refund
DEWA, or Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, has integrated its services with Emirates NBD and Western Union, making requesting your DEWA deposit more seamless.
But before getting your DEWA deposit refund, ensure that you’ve fulfilled the following criteria:
- You have vacated the property that has the DEWA connection.
- You have shared your updated email address and phone number.
- You have paid off any outstanding amounts from your previous DEWA bills.
Here are the steps to requesting a DEWA deposit refund once you have completed the above steps:
- Step One: Visit the DEWA website and log into your account. You will be redirected to your account’s dashboard.
- Step Two: Click the menu on the top left, then select Billing. From the options, select Request for Refund.
- Step Three: You’ll see a menu that says ‘Apply Online’ in green. Once you click this, you’ll be redirected to a page where you select the connection for refund and then pay off the outstanding amount (if any).
You can select the medium you’d want your amount refunded – IBAN or Western Union.
- Step Four: If you have selected IBAN, you will be asked to attach the IBAN bank proof that mentions the beneficiary’s name. You will be asked to type in a verification code sent to your mobile number or email.
Once done, hit submit, and you’ll get a confirmation that the request has been submitted.
If you choose Western Union, Cheque or Transfer to another active account, select the channel that will receive your verification code (mobile number or email address). Once you submit this code, you submit the service request application, and there will be a confirmation that your request has been submitted.
Western Union is your best choice if you live abroad, as you can get your DEWA deposit from any branch globally. You can collect your refund from a different city in the same country, except if you collect the amount from Mexico and the USA.
Each medium has a limit for the refunds that can be deposited.
- IBAN has a limit of less than AED 200k
- Western Union has a limit of AED 20 to AED 18k
- Cheques are for amounts exceeding AED 200k
If you choose Western Union, you will receive a notification with your Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) generated. You can get your DEWA refund by showing this MTCN to any Western Union branch.
Remember that the MTCN is valid for 30 days.
- Step Six: You can track your refund on the same page as where you apply for a refund. Switch to the ‘Track Refund” section, and you can see whether it is under process. You will get your refund within three to six days, depending on the chosen method.
