Expert advice with Paul Kelly of Allsopp & Allsopp: Growing as a real estate agent in Dubai
Real estate is one of the most lucrative careers in the UAE, with agents and brokers facilitating millions of transactions, architects designing world-famous structures, and developers churning out one project after the other. Being a real estate agent in Dubai is no joke, however, it takes a certain level of passion, commitment and hard work to stand out and make a mark in the burgeoning property market of the emirate. This week, we at Bayut are excited to hear from Paul Kelly, the Operations Director of the prestigious real estate agency, Allsopp & Allsopp about his own journey in the Dubai property market, and, career advice for real estate agents in Dubai.
Paul Kelly’s Journey from Agent to Operations Director
It was almost a decade ago, in 2011 that Paul moved to the glorious emirate of Dubai, after good friend Darren Murphy, the current Sales and Leasing Director for Allsopp & Allsopp convinced him that the property market in the emirate was the ideal place for him to be. The tax-free earnings and luxurious lifestyle were obvious factors that made Manchester-born Paul take the leap. He started off with managing properties in Dubai Marina and quickly moved on to the then unheard of properties in Victory Heights. Rising to the immense challenge of trading the always-in-demand Dubai Marina, for what was then an obscure area, Paul managed to transform the perception of Victory Heights within the company and the market in general. Soon, the upmarket properties in Jumeirah Golf Estates were also added to his portfolio. Since then, there has been no looking back! After wearing multiple hats and facing diverse challenges, Paul became the Operations Director of Allsopp & Allsopp in 2016. He now assists the Allsopp brothers in the running of the business and is a pivotal player in the continued success of the highly respected real estate agency.
Tips for Real Estate Agents in Dubai
According to Paul, the single most important factor when it comes to being a real estate agent in Dubai or anywhere else in the world is the person’s mental makeup. One needs to have a strong mentality to be able to make it as a successful real estate agent in Dubai. His professional advice to real estate agents, especially the newcomers is to have the right attitude. Other things can be taught, but to retain the enthusiasm and optimism in the face of multiple challenging situations is what you need to have inherently as a real estate agent in Dubai.
It’s also important to want to learn. One of the best tips for real estate agents in Dubai is to watch, observe and learn from existing agents. In an agency such as Allsopp & Allsopp, where everyone, including senior management, has experienced life as real estate agents, there is a wealth of information to be tapped into. Become a sponge; observe and learn and soak up all the information you can from peers and seniors. There is no replacement for on-the-job learning when it comes to making it as a top Dubai real estate agent.
Paul himself found it challenging to build trust as a property agent in the city, where the profession is often looked upon with a certain amount of wariness. His best career advice for real estate agents in Dubai is work hard on such challenges by keeping themselves fully committed. Things will take a turn for the positive. Put your energy into making your clients realise the benefits of using a real estate agent so you can gain some valuable recommendations. Use every learning opportunity you can find, and, always show that you are up for new challenges. Moving out of your comfort zone, and, accepting responsibility sends the right signals about your professional ethics.
