New Cinema Age Classifications in the UAE: Introduces 21+ rating
The United Arab Emirates has introduced a new 21+ rating for cinema releases. As per the latest amendment, movies with this rating will no longer be censored by the country’s media authority. Read on to learn more about the new cinema age classifications in the UAE.
THE UAE ADOPTS 21+ AGE CLASSIFICATION
The UAE ends censorship of movie screenings by officially introducing a rating for cinema audiences aged 21 and above. This means that titles released with the 21+ classification will not be edited or cut, as was the case before. The announcement was made by the country’s Media Regulatory Office.
The nation’s recent amendment to its movie content rating is one of several laws that were revamped. This includes looser restrictions on alcohol licencing laws in Dubai. Additionally, new personal family laws in the UAE now allow unmarried couples to live together in the country. A more recent change was the introduction of the new Saturday and Sunday weekend in the UAE, come 2022— a transition to the more globally adopted end to the workweek.
THE NEW CENSORSHIP POLICY
Until now, the highest age rating in the UAE was 18+. The latest ruling will allow the UAE Media Regulatory Office to add a 21+ rating to international movie titles — instead of editing it – as was the case in the past for some movies. As per their statement, “The movies will be screened in cinemas according to their international versions.”
