LULU ISLAND ABU DHABI – AN OVERVIEW
Al Lulu, which translates into a pearl, is a man-made island spread across 1,050 acres. It sits around 6.2 km from the capital city, parallel to the Corniche Public Beach. The infamous architectural firm, Arquitectonica, developed this marvellous island.
Although Lulu Island isn’t a new development, it only recently became a popular destination for residents and visitors. It boasts white sandy beaches, parks, freshwater lakes and dedicated sports areas, making it one of the top picnic spots in Abu Dhabi.
A PEEK INTO ISLAND’S HISTORY
Lulu Island was built in 1992. It was envisioned by the late His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan as a keystone of Abu Dhabi’s growth. The initial plan was to build an Arabian-themed Disneyland, a world-class resort and recreational facilities on the island.
Sorough Real Estate was handed over the task of figuring out a development plan for the island in 2008. However, Lulu’s development plan stopped due to the global financial crisis.
Today, this pristine island remains unchanged compared to other islands in Abu Dhabi, such as Yas Island and Reem Island. But, it still boasts a broad marsh and Arabian desert where visitors can enjoy the true beauty of nature.
