All about the Heart of Sharjah project
With a focus on revitalising some of Sharjah’s iconic historical areas, the Heart of Sharjah project is one of Sharjah’s most ambitious and valuable developments to date. Read on to find out more about this impressively ambitious endeavour that was instigated by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq).
What is the Heart of Sharjah project?
In 1998, Sharjah was named the Cultural Capital of the Arab World by UNESCO. It was a well-deserved accolade and was achieved by embracing a vision and ideals the emirate continues to cultivate today. Sharjah preserves its history by incorporating traditional aspects into every phase of contemporary development.
As part of this vision, the Heart of Sharjah represents a dedicated effort to refurbish some of the city’s historical sites. Although the project is still under development, it is already playing host to annual events. It may also be one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in the UAE soon as it is already on the list of candidates.
Expected to be complete by 2025, the Heart of Sharjah is one of the region’s largest heritage projects and is dedicated to restoring the area to exactly how it was in the 1950s. The project features five distinct phases and was the product of a collaboration between the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority, Sharjah Museums Department and the Sharjah Art Foundation. `
The area comprises several historic buildings, including the ruler’s residence and a preserved souq area. It is also worth mentioning that the area was home to the first schools in the emirate. Its historical significance is also apparent in the narrow roads, winding alleyways and old houses inhabited by those who originally established the area.
Aside from the Emirates Handicraft Centre, the project is also home to several historical sites in Sharjah, such as the Mleiha Archaeological site.
Souq al Shanasiyah in the Heart of Sharjah
The Souq Al Shanasiyah is a historic souq located strategically on Corniche Street. Excavations between the Corniche and Al Hisn Fort, undertaken during the first phase of this historical project, revealed the old souq’s foundation. The ruler of Sharjah, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, then gave instructions to reconstruct a new marketplace on the foundations of the old – thereby keeping in line with Shurooq’s vision to develop the emirate’s economic and tourist facilities.
Souq Al Shanasiyah is one of the oldest and most vibrant souqs in the region. The area still retains the name of the former souq, a word derived from the state of Shanas, which was the home of the merchants who used to frequent it.
