HISTORY
Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, fondly known as The Mother of the Nation launched Emirates Women’s Day on 15th August 2015.
Her Highness Sheikha Fatima is the wife of the UAE’s Founder, the late His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. She is the Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood. In 2017, UN Women honoured Sheikha Fatima for her endeavours toward gender equality and empowerment in the UAE.
The day also honours the creation of UAE’s General Women’s Union on 28th August 1975. The special day highlights the contributions of Emirati women and applauds their dedication, strength and achievements that have helped to shape the nation.
Theme for 2024
The annual celebration has a theme each year which highlights particular contributions by women. As per the directive of Mother of the Nation, Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the theme for 2024 is “We Share for Tomorrow.”
