Dubai has been the flag-bearer of sustainable and responsible tourism in the region. In line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Department of Economy and Tourism has recently launched the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp. The program aims to reward hotel establishments that go above and beyond in their sustainable practices. Here’s everything you need to know about this forward-thinking initiative.
DUBAI SUSTAINABLE TOURISM STAMP EXPLAINED
Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp aims to celebrate hotels that adhere to the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET)’s 19 “Sustainability Requirements”. The program will solidify Dubai’s position as one of the top tourist destinations fulfilling the goals defined in the Dubai Economic Agenda.

According to Yousuf Lootah, Acting CEO of Corporate Strategy and Performance Sector, Department of Economy and Tourism of Dubai:
“Supported by Dubai’s vibrant hotel industry, this initiative is a strategic step towards achieving our goal of making Dubai a leading destination for global travellers seeking the ultimate sustainability experience. By supporting businesses and encouraging them to adopt eco-friendly practices and reducing their carbon footprint, we are not only safeguarding the environment but also promoting sustainable growth.”
HOW TO GET THE STAMP?
Founded in collaboration with Dubai’s hospitality sector, the stamp will operate a three-tier system with Gold, Silver and Bronze categories. To obtain the stamp, hotels must meet the highest standards of DET’s 19 Sustainability Requirements. The criteria include achieving parameters such as energy and water efficiency, waste management, staff education, and engagement initiatives.
The nomination period for hotels to obtain the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp is until 31st August 2023. A committee of senior industry professionals will oversee the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp accreditation process for hotels.
WHAT IS DUBAI SUSTAINABLE TOURISM?
Initiated by H.H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Sustainable Tourism integrates the tourism industry with the Sustainable Development Goals and the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 policy.
Launched in 2016, it is a public-private partnership that has established several goals for Dubai’s tourism sector. These include lowering carbon emissions from industry-related activities, reducing water and energy use, and boosting environmentally friendly transportation.
The campaign also emphasises promoting regional cultural and historical attractions. It entices tourists to adopt responsible tourism by minimising waste and supporting nearby businesses.
