What happens in a British Royal Coronation?
On the 6th and 7th of May, 2023, King Charles III will be crowned as King of England alongside the Queen Consort (his wife), Camilla. This event will take place at Westminister Abbey in London, surrounded by members of the royal family and cheered on by British citizens.
The coronation, the event where the monarch has the King or Queen’s Crown placed on their head for the first time, has remained the same for thousands of years. It marks the monarch becoming the head of the Church of England and receiving the title and powers of being a King or Queen of England.
The British royal coronation will be live-streamed by BBC One and BBC Radio.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is attending the British Royal Coronation?
King Charles’ siblings, Princess Royal (Anne) and the Duke of Edinburgh (Edward) will be attending the event. Then, his children, The Prince and Princess of Wales, Prince William and Catherine, and Prince Harry will also be present. Although Prince William and Catherine will bring their children (in fact, their son, Prince George, will be one of the ‘pages of honour’), Harry will be on his own and his son Archie will be in the United States.
Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, will attend, along with daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, has not been invited. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and former prime ministers Liz Truss and Tony Blair will also participate.
Other dignitaries attending include the Māori King, Kiingi Tūheitia, from New Zealand, French President Emmanuel Macron, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Philippines’ President Ferdinand Marcos and more.
What crown will be used for the coronation?
The famed 17th Century St Edward’s Crown, made of solid gold, will be used for King Charles III’s coronation. Allegedly, it is pretty heavy and is exclusive to this occasion. He will put on an Imperial State crown towards the end of the ceremony, which can be seen as he makes his appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony.
This crown contains the Second Star of Africa diamond or the Cullinan II. It was given by the government of a former British colony, Transvaal (modern-day South Africa), to Edward II.
We are excited to see how this royal coronation pans out – seeing Charles III officially take the throne. Since the British coronation is the only remaining event in Europe, everyone is on the hunt for snippets or news about it. It is also one of the anticipated upcoming events in Dubai as well.
