Everything you need to know about Dubai Metro Blue Line
Travelling through public transport is a sustainable way to commute. Not only is it cheaper, but it can also help reduce traffic congestion and pollution. Many cities worldwide are improving their public transport systems as a commendable move towards a greener, more liveable future. Dubai already has Dubai Metro. This state-of-the-art automated and driverless rail system connects popular destinations across the city.
The two existing metro lines, Green and Red, offer commuters a hassle-free and comfortable travel experience. An announcement has been made regarding a new metro line. The Dubai Metro Blue Line aims to connect some of the most popular residential areas with the main city. Let’s delve into some more details about this new Blue Line.
Blue Line Overview
As mentioned earlier, the Blue Line is an upcoming metro line on the Dubai Metro network serving the Dubai International Airport and the Al Maktoum International Airport. It will be 30 kilometres long, with 14 stations. Five underground stations will cover 15.5 km of track, and the remaining nine stations will be above ground. Furthermore, the line will run alongside Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311).
The original proposal for the Blue Line was released in 2006, but the idea was put on hold. The new plan for the metro line announced in 2023 seems to be redesigned to align with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. This strategic development project will prepare the city for a surge in population and increased need for accommodation and transport.
One key goal of this plan is to offer residents 80% of their daily needs in a 20-minute radius, on foot or by bicycle. With each step, we’ll see new service centres and residences around transit stations, aiming for more accessible urban living.

- The metro will then continue and connect Dubai International City 2 and 3, and Dubai Silicon Oasis, concluding at Academic City.
- A second route will connect Mirdiff and Al Warqaa, connecting with the interchange station at Dubai International City 1.
- Travel times between each station is expected to be between 10 to 25 minutes.

- Nine Dubai Metro Blue Line stations will be above ground and five underground. Dubai Creek Harbour would have an “iconic station”, matching the contemporary towers and residences and area by having a “distinctive architectural design”. The International City station is to be 44k square metres, making it the largest underground interchange station of the Dubai Metro network.
- There will be 28 driverless trains and a depot built to hold 60 trains.
- It will run on a similar electromechanical system, identical to the other metro lines.
