Starting Off In Real estate
I began my career in advertising in the UAE in 1986. I focused on public relations regionally – after which I ran my family’s offshore investment brokerage in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan for twelve years. I then went back to the UAE to work as a regional business development consultant for a renowned international radio communications distributor in the UAE.
After celebrating a milestone birthday, I decided to try my hand at working in real estate. So, yes, technically, I am new to the industry. And believe me, I have truly worked long and hard to learn the skills necessary to succeed in this career from the ground up. I put my blood, sweat and tears into acquiring some of these skills.
Today I am delighted to feel confident about my ability to perform well at my job. I represent the ROCKY team with respect, professionalism and pride.
The Skills That Propelled The Vision
The most essential skill that has been invaluable in helping me close my deal is good ol’ fashioned networking. My lifelong love for this skill and being heavily involved in networking has helped me a great deal – and I’m not talking about the seemingly mercenary way that introductions and referrals are offered in most sales-based industries today.
Sure, there is no such thing as a ‘free lunch’. But there most certainly is such a thing as genuine and heartfelt respect and reciprocation for good deeds, in both business and life. Which can be enjoyed by all, as long as everyone plays fair, of course.
This really is a key factor for my success in this industry, and the reason that I choose to jump out of my bed in the morning and put all of my efforts into my schedule and responsibilities for the day ahead.
I achieved my biggest deal to date by far, just a few weeks ago. It was a residential rental deal for just six months and totalled a phenomenal AED7.2M!
Get the latest tips for Real Estate Success
It was definitely not an easy ride. But I was able to manage both the landlord’s and the tenant’s teams intelligently – with the necessary patience and strictness to reach an agreement and keep both parties happy with the eventual result.
I use transaction data – which offers real-time and accurate synopsis of the real estate activity in Dubai – to keep myself up-to-date on the industry. Honesty is another key skill for me, and I feel most comfortable operating in a highly customer-focused manner.
Bayut Academy Paves The Way
I was fortunate enough to learn a lot from the Bayut Academy during my first couple of months in the industry. Your exceptional and charming trainer Ms Caroline Tinkle did an excellent job of getting me into the mindset of never giving up on this industry.
“It is going to be hard, very hard at times. But you will succeed, and all of the pain, hardship, lies, let-downs and frustrations this industry throws at you in abundance, will pale into insignificance once you start to crack your first big deals”.
I love the challenge of my job. No two days are ever the same, and it is such a pleasure to meet diverse nationalities and personalities. Many interesting things are guaranteed to occur on every given day.
Retrospectively, my advice would be to my younger self would be to get into this industry sooner, so that I would have had the opportunity to enjoy many more years of riding this wave for longer!
